It has been 8 years since Pamela Leal’s 17-year-old daughter Bailey Mae took her own life, and not a moment goes by that she’s not on her mind.
“I am forever grateful for the support I received from our wonderful community as I processed a tragedy that no parent should ever experience,” said Leal. I also credit my Yoga practice for instilling a sense of balance that would help me turn my grief into something positive. Something that would continue to honor Bailey’s life.”
Each day in our nation, there is an average of over 3,703 suicide attempts by young people in grades 9-12. If these percentages are additionally applied to grades 7 and 8, the numbers would be higher.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34, and the fourth leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 35 and 44.
Leal, who has three other daughters: Madison, and twins Paige and Marissa, wants to end this silent epidemic and asks for the community’s support at their Yogathon Fundraiser.
Held on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., the event information says, “Yogathon is a way to share the elements of yoga that bring peace and develop strength while raising awareness about suicide prevention and mental health among this vulnerable group.”
The local yoga community will be on hand, and entertainers, vendors, and special guests.
The money raised from this event benefits several different organizations, including Henderson Behavioral Health, The Faulk Center For Counseling, and The Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention, which offers counseling, education, and support for teenagers trying to cope with depression and anxiety.
Thanks to the Yogathon, Over 200 participants from Coral Springs, Parkland, Coconut Creek, and Boca Raton take 1 or 2 yoga and pilates classes with a small donation. To ensure the fundraiser’s success, Leal says they seek contributions to help defray the costs associated with the event so that all funds can go directly toward the community.
“I hope you will consider donating,” said Leal, who said that in place of monetary donations, gift certificates, or in-kind services will be welcomed for their silent auction/raffle.
The event takes place at Evolution Yoga, located at 6814 North State Road 7 Coconut Creek 33073.
