The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation held its 11th annual “Walk-Off for Cancer” in Parkland on Saturday, raising $1.3 million to support pediatric cancer patients and families.
Rizzo, the New York Yankees first baseman and cancer survivor, returned to his hometown to lead a 1.3-mile walk that attracted 1,000 to Pine Trails Park.
Among the participants was a group representing Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, a facility whose cancer patients Anthony has visited, where his foundation has donated more than $1 million and established a child life specialist’s position to work with children and families impacted by cancer.
“It’s just an amazing children’s hospital that really takes care of the kids and makes it a family-friendly environment during such a tough time, and that’s not easy to do in a hospital,” said Rizzo. “The legacy that Joe DiMaggio left behind is something that I think all of us trying to raise money for cancer definitely appreciate.”
Michael and Shelby Morency, parents who received life-saving assistance from the Rizzo Family Foundation while their infant son was being treated for neuroblastoma, also shared their story at the event.
