Marjory Stoneman Douglas officially held signing day on February 15, with six student-athletes making their college decision.
The girls lacrosse team had a historic day, beating Pine Crest School for the first time. They won 13-8 to move to 2-0 for the first time since 2020 after beating Western High School 20-4 in the first game. Taylor McGovern, who signed with Lee University in Tennessee, shined with three goals and seven assists.
“I was so excited to be part of the signing day at Stoneman Douglas,” McGovern said. “I loved having my teammates and family there to celebrate with me. I have wanted to play lacrosse at the collegiate level since I was a little girl. “Having this ceremony makes the whole thing even more real.”
McGovern had 151 career goals in high school and knew from the moment she stepped on campus that this would be her home for the next four years.
“When I visited Lee University and spent time with the team, I knew this was going to be my home for the next four years, McGovern said. “I look forward to helping our team finish strong as an Eagle.”
Rhodes is a goaltender who transferred to MSD and will play at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. She says being signed is a strange feeling but says it is nice to see her effort rewarded.
“It definitely makes senior year less stressful because I only had to do one college application,” Rhodes said. “It’s honestly something that I’ve wanted for so long that when it finally happened, I was over the moon excited.”
Rhodes began playing lacrosse in first grade with the Redhawks before joining the Extreme. She has also played for Stealth and Florida Select. When selecting where to play in college, she wanted to find a school that would allow her to play lacrosse and pre-vet-major.
“I wanted to find somewhere where it felt like home and where all the people just felt like family right away, and that’s definitely what I found in my school, and I couldn’t be happier,” Rhodes added.
Next, MSD will play Boca Raton Community High School in their next game on Tuesday, February 20, at 7 p.m. The Bobcats beat the Eagles in the District Championship game and eliminated them in the Regional Tournament.
The softball team played in two preseason games under coach Sammy Kelly and beat West Boca Raton High School 4-3.
Victoria Diaz, who signed to play with Manhattan College, knocked in a run along with Makenzie Degan. Diaz also picked up the win, pitching five innings and allowing two runs while striking out seven. She is now 6-1 in high school and is batting .368
Isabella Silva signed with Florida National University. She batted .304 in high school, hit two home runs, and drove in 34 runs.
The football team had a pair of players sign from the football team with Jeremy Fishkin and William Ross. Fishkin signed with Florida A&M University and was a significant part of the offensive line for MSD.
Ross will be playing at Florida State University and had a tremendous season on the defensive line for a team that won four games this year.
