The quest for a fourth straight State and National Championship is officially underway for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team following a 14-0 win over Westminster Academy on Wednesday.
The Eagles, now winning 52 straight games, had home runs from Rylan Lujo and Bennett Gary. Those two players also knocked in seven runs, while Lorenzo Laurel had an RBI triple with Devin Fitz-Gerald, Nick Diaz, Michael Ossenfort, Riley Mudlin, and Reese Burton also drove in runs. Gavin Gargiulo was on the mound and pitched three scoreless innings, striking out six. David Goldapper and Payton Jay tossed the final two innings out of the bullpen to close out the win.
“It’s great to see the guys come out fired up and ready to go tonight,” Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. “We were prepared well today. I couldn’t be happier and more excited to start season one. Onto the next one.
Next, MSD will play against Miami Springs High School on Thursday, February 22, at 6:30 p.m. The Golden Hawks won 17 games a season ago but lost 7-2 in their only meeting against the Eagles last season before losing in Regionals.
The Eagles also had a former State Champion recognized in college with Cameron Harris, winning Player of the Week at Wingate College.
Harris, a 2022 graduate from MSD, went 10-for-17 at the plate for the week with a homer, two doubles, five RBI, ten runs scored, and two stolen bases. His team went 4-0, while Harris had three multi-hit games and stole a base in every matchup.
Jake Clemente, a 2022 graduate from MSD, made his first college appearance for the University of Florida. After missing his freshmen year with an injury, Clemente struck out three in one inning during the Gators’ 10-0 win over the University of North Florida.
