The Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls lacrosse team began the season with a matchup on Monday against Western High School.
The Eagles moved to 1-0 for the fourth time in the last five years following a 20-4 win.
“Tonight’s game was a fantastic start to the season,” Head Coach Scott Iardella said. “Every game is a learning experience for us to get better and better. We are very proud of the effort and teamwork that was displayed tonight, and there’s much to build on. Overall, the team played extremely well.”
The Eagles had eight different players score a goal, with Kaitlyn Irwin leading the way with five. Freshman Patricia Phang had 12 ground ball recoveries and eight draw controls, playing an outstanding game, according to her coach, in her first action as an Eagle.
The rest of the team consists of Gracyn Haynes, Taylor McGovern, Sofia Riley, Taylor Serbin, Nigella Alexander, Sophie Szkaradek, Ellie Barbati, Amanda Bilsky, Mary Devney, Sammy Shortz, Aubrey Kasen, Maggie Davis, Lilly Shortz, Caroline Lam, Taryn Bander, Stephanie Bilsky, Gia Capistrano, Chloe Resnik, Saoirse Popen, Liana Marchenko, Erika DiBitetto, Carlie Coyle, Marissa Gallagher, Addy Sacks, Celebre Rhodes, and Gianna McGinty.
The Eagles had a terrific season last year, making it to the Regional Quarterfinals and winning 12 matches. They will play again on Thursday, February 16, against Pine Crest School at 5 p.m.
