From MSD to the Stanley Cup: Gostisbehere Sets Up Overtime Winner in Game 2 of Stanley Cup

From the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas to the biggest stage in hockey, Shayne Gostisbehere continues to leave his mark.

The veteran defenseman recorded the primary assist on the game-winning goal Thursday night as the Carolina Hurricanes earned a dramatic 4-3 overtime victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, evening the best-of-seven series at one game apiece.

Playing in his first Stanley Cup Final, Gostisbehere helped Carolina capitalize on a power play in overtime, finding Seth Jarvis for the decisive goal. The Coral Springs native grew up playing youth hockey with the Florida Panthers’ local youth affiliate before embarking on a standout career that has taken him to the NHL’s grandest stage.

Gostisbehere was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round (78th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft after starring at Union College. During his collegiate career, he helped lead the Dutchmen to their first NCAA National Championship in 2014 and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. He was also a finalist for the 2014 Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the nation’s top college hockey player.

Internationally, Gostisbehere was part of the United States team that captured the gold medal at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Now in his 13th NHL season, Gostisbehere made his debut with the Flyers in 2015 and has also spent time with the Arizona Coyotes and Detroit Red Wings before returning to the Hurricanes.

Known for his offensive production from the blue line, Gostisbehere has totaled 117 career goals in 744 regular-season games. He scored 13 goals this season, matching one of the best offensive campaigns of his career, and has added 3 goals and 6 assists in the playoffs.

Gostisbehere also made his presence felt in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, scoring the game-tying goal before Carolina eventually fell 5-4. Currently, the Hurricanes trail 2-1 in the series following a loss in Game 3 and will be back in action for Game 4 on Tuesday, June 9 at 8 p.m.
