MSD Sophomores Shine on Big Stage, McGuinn Earns All-Star Honor 5

Two of the brightest young talents in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball program earned a chance to showcase their skills on a larger stage this summer, while one senior pitched in an all-star game

Surrounded by a senior-laden roster, sophomores Tyler Stertzbach and Ander Elorriaga emerged as key contributors this season, playing significant roles in Marjory Stoneman Douglas’ run to a sixth straight state title.

Stertzbach delivered one of the biggest performances of the season in the state semifinals against Hagerty High School. With the Eagles saving their ace and potential first-round draft pick, Gio Rojas, for the championship game, Stertzbach was called into action in the third inning.

The right-hander responded by pitching five outstanding innings, allowing just one run while striking out eight batters. His effort kept the Eagles in position until Jackson Taylor delivered a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the victory.

Stertzbach finished the season with a 3-1 record and a 1.30 ERA. In 10 appearances, he logged 26.1 innings, striking out 28 batters while serving as one of the Eagles’ most reliable arms.

Elorriaga’s signature moment came in the State Championship Game against top-ranked Venice High School. With the Eagles clinging to a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning, he executed a perfectly placed two-strike suicide squeeze that drove in what proved to be the game’s decisive run.

Despite missing part of the season due to injury, Elorriaga appeared in 25 games and batted .279 with one home run and 14 RBIs. He also scored seven runs, collected three doubles, and provided valuable versatility while playing both catcher and outfield throughout the season.

Carter McGuinn pitched in the FACA All-Star Game at Stetson University and is set to play next year at College of Central Florida. After recording one win as a junior, the left-hander went 2-2 as a senior, making one start and 12 relief appearances. McGuinn also struck out more than a batter per inning, recording 28 strikeouts in 22.1 innings this year.
