
Marjory Stoneman Douglas Boys Basketball Team. {Jayme Poulos}
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas boys and girls basketball teams have begun the season with a pair of wins.
The boys’ team recorded a 66-61 win over J.P. Taravella on Monday in their first game, with Zach Story and Derek Scheidt each scoring 13 points. Jeremiah Backer added 12 while Caleb Vanbronkhorst had 10 points, Liam Refaeli led the team with three steals, and Jacob Rayvis, Story, Khristian Slack, Vanbronkhorst, and Backer all had two steals.
The Eagles then defeated Charles W. Flanagan High School 77-64 behind a dominant first quarter. MSD outscored the Falcons 31-10 while Derek Scheidt and Vanbronkhors each scored 16. Story also added 16 and had 12 rebounds.
MSD went 10-13 last year and will play Deerfield Beach High School in their next game on Thursday, November 20 at 7:3o p.m. The Bucks lost their first game of the season and lost 58-56 in the lone meeting last year.
The girls’ team beat J.P. Taravella 66-14 and followed that up with a 49-20 victory over Charles W. Flanagan High School 49-20 tot improve to 2-0 for the first time since the 2016 season.
Next, the Eagles will also play Deerfield Beach High School on Thursday, November 20, at 6:30 p.m. They are 0-1 but went 12-9 last year after beating MSD 57-53.
