
Marjory Stoneman Douglas Girls Soccer. {David Volz}
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas boys and girls soccer teams began their season with wins in their first game.
The boys’ team went 12-3-2 last year, finishing 34th in the state and 98th nationally after winning a District Championship and playing in Regionals. They knocked off Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School 1-0 behind a goal from Antony Carnuccio, assisted by Aquiles Yiribin.
Their next game will be on Wednesday, November 12, at 7:30 p.m. against Cypress Bay High School. These teams played to a 2-2 tie during their lone meeting last year as the Lightning finished the season 12-5-3.
The girls ‘team was scheduled to face Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in their first game, but it was cancelled. They would play on Monday and beat Coral Springs Charter 1-0, with the lone goal coming from Alli Offstein. This was also the first victory for coach Chris Sousa, who took over for coach Laura Rountree after she announced her retirement. Sousa was an assistant under Rountree and also coaches travel ball.
The Eagles went 12-2-6 a season ago and fell in the Regional Final. However, they finished the season ranked 15th in the state and 43rd nationally while winning their seventh straight District Title. Next, MSD will play Cypress Bay High School on Wednesday, November 12, at 5:30 p.m. The Lightning are 3-0 this year and were knocked out of the playoffs a year ago by MSD.
