It was a busy day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Monday night, as both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams were able to pick up wins during their home game against Monarch High School during a doubleheader.
For the boys, it was their second win of the season, as they improve to 2-2. For the girls, it was win number one on the season.
Boys Team
In game number four under first-year head coach, Christian Chacon, the Eagles defeated Monarch 3-2 in a hard-fought battle. The Eagles entered the game struggling to score, but converted three times, including two in the opening half.
“It was a great win,” Chacon said. “All the guys played really hard. They won every ball, including all the 50-50 balls. I feel like they gave everything they had.”
The first goal of the night came from Julen Arriaga for his first tally of the season. Soon after, Mason Hall gave MSD a 2-0 lead with his first of two goals in the game. Despite Monarch scoring late in the first half, Hall was able to capitalize again, before conceding a late goal penalty kick goal.
Gabriel Gersberg led the team with two assists as much of the game went through the midfielder. Senior goalkeeper Alex Duque was in the net and allowed only one goal. Fellow captain Zach Devito was a mainstay on the defensive end, playing the entire game.

Girls Team
Playing just minutes after the boys exited the field in Parkland, the MSD girls’ varsity soccer team earned their first win of the season in dominant fashion, defeating Monarch 6-1 to move to 1-1-1 on the season.
“It was super exciting to score some goals and get a win,” said Head Coach Laura Rountree, who has been coaching MSD since the school opened in 1990. “Everybody worked really hard, and it showed with some things we tried to improve on in practice.”
While MSD lost their entire midfield as well as their leading scorers from a team that went 13-2-3 last season, one of the few members of that team, Krystina Masihy, had a hat-trick. She scored three of the team’s six goals Monday night after the team did not score in any of the previous three games.
Masihy’s first two goals came within the first 16 minutes, and then Molly Conn scored on a rebound to give MSD a 3-0 lead. They would go up 4-0 into halftime courtesy of Emily Burke and then scored two more second-half goals from Conn and Masihy.
With tons of new faces on the team, the Eagles called up Bria Hendry to the varsity team and saw her get some minutes.
“I am proud of myself for the hat-trick, but I think everybody played with a lot of intensity,” Masihy said. “They left their hearts on the field, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish.”
Up next, girls will host West Boca High School on Dec. 4 at 5:00 p.m., and the boys will travel to Cypress Bay for the team’s first road game of the season also at 5:00 p.m.
