The playoffs have begun, and several Marjory Stoneman Douglas teams are already making their mark in pursuit of a state championship, highlighted by the girls’ tennis team capturing a district title at Pembroke Pines Charter High School.
The Eagles dominated the competition, winning all seven matches to secure 14 points. They capped off an impressive season with an 11-0 record and 72 total match victories. The team featured Claire Schwartz, Allison Kehler, Sarah Kumar, Caroline Oliveira, Briana Loo Martinez, Dhea Bagirathan, Haileigh Fountain, Martina Velez, Zara Risavy, Dylainey Risavy, with contributions across the lineup, including strong leadership from the seniors. Bagirathan earned an automatic spot in the state championship in singles along with her partner, Zara in doubles.
The boys’ tennis team also delivered a strong performance, finishing second in the district tournament. They won four matches to earn eight points and closed the season with an 8-3 record and 52 total match wins. The team included Hermann Stelling, Ryan Tomek, Diego Perero, Santiago Gonzales, Brady Cox, Jeremy Winnick, Max Kramer, Brody Russinoff, Michael Moosa, Joey Gately, and Tomas Motta. Both teams will now turn their attention to regionals on Tuesday, April 21.
The boys’ lacrosse team, which recorded just one win during the regular season, matched that total in the postseason with a 14-11 victory over Western High School in the opening round of the district tournament. Seeded sixth, the Eagles advanced to face Christopher Columbus High School in the semifinals but fell 19-0. Their other win this season came in a 19-1 victory over Coral Glades.
The girls’ lacrosse team enjoyed a strong season, finishing 10-4 and earning the No. 2 seed in the district tournament. They opened with a 12-8 win over Miami Palmetto Senior High School, then advanced to the championship game, where they were defeated 9-5 by top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas High School.
The track and field team was highlighted by Griffin Haynes, who placed second in the javelin, while Avi Gabbay earned a strong finish in the high jump. Colton Pattock took third place, Sergio Lozano finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles, and Kyle Pan placed seventh in the 400 meters. The 4×800 relay team also contributed with an eighth-place finish as the team finished 10th overall.
On the girls’ side, Alexis Freckleton led the way with a fourth-place finish in the long jump, while Cecilia Gago also placed fourth in the 800 meters. Alexys Caropreso finished just behind her, and both Victoria Mallermabln and Olympia Koumoutsakis secured top-eight finishes. The 4×800 relay team added another top-eight result to round out the meet and finish seventh as a team.
In the pool, the boys’ water polo team captured a district championship and earned the No. 8 seed in the regional quarterfinals. The Eagles saw their season end with a 22-8 loss, finishing the year with an 8-9 record. Despite the result, the future is bright, led by freshman Benjamin Ruytenbeek, who finished among the top goal scorers in the country.
The girls’ water polo team also claimed a championship and entered regionals as the No. 5 seed. Their season concluded with a 20-6 loss to Miami Country Day School. Like the boys team, the Eagles have a promising future, highlighted by sophomore Sadie Titensor, who ranked among the nation’s top scorers this season.
