Marjory Stoneman Douglas had both its boys and girls soccer teams advance to the Regional Tournament, setting up a pair of matchups with powerhouse Cypress Bay High School in the Semifinals.
The girls’ team opened regional play Thursday with a 3–0 victory over Doral Academy. Audrey Haltiwanger led the way with two goals, while Isabella Bayarri also found the back of the net. Alexa Jourdan, Alli Ofstein and Breanna Gordon each recorded assists, and Sabrina Cernach made five saves in goal to earn the shutout.
The win continued a postseason surge for the Eagles, who finished the regular season with just six victories before catching fire in the District Tournament. MSD won two district games, including an overtime victory against Doral Academy in the championship match.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 9-6-2 and will face top-seeded Cypress Bay High School on Wednesday, February 11, at 5 p.m. Cypress Bay enters the match ranked 11th in the state and 12th nationally. The Lightning are 18-1 this season, with their lone loss coming against Cardinal Gibbons High School. Cypress Bay defeated MSD 3-1 in the teams’ only meeting this season and went on to win its district title before defeating Goleman High School 4-1 in the opening round of regionals.
On the boys’ side, MSD also punched its ticket to the next round with a 3–2 win over Miami Palmetto Senior High School. The Eagles improved to 11-1-2 on the season before playing Cypress Bay High School. The Lightning handed the Eagles their only loss of the season and is currently ranked second in both the state and the country. Downtown Doral was the only team to defeat Cypress Bay this year, as the Lightning rebounded to win the District Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Doral Academy in the final before opening regional play with a win over Wellington High School.
