The Marjory Stoneman Douglas softball team competed in the Orange Bowl Classic in Miami this past weekend.
The Eagles began the tournament with an 8-3 loss against Cooper City High School despite RBIs from Addison Zajkowski, Camryn Ferro, and Lily Torres. However, MSD responded with three straight victories, with their first one against Schoolhouse Prep after erasing a 4-1 deficit.
The Eagles scored five runs in their final at-bat, with Ferro driving in a team-high three RBIs in an 8-4 victory. Maya Korenge knocked in two, while Zajkowski struck out eight in five innings. MSD then posted a dominant 14-0 win against Lourdes Academy. The Eagles scored eight runs in the third, with eight players driving in a run.
Myah Boleen, Zajkowski, Antonia Nelke, Caliegh D’Agati, and Sophia McComas all drove in two, while Lucia Perez, Torres, and Dani Rincon knocked in one. Kaitlin Enright pitched a shutout and struck out seven in five innings.
MSD won big again in their final game, defeating Mater Academy 13-0. Zajkowski tossed a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and drove in five runs. Boleen added three RBIs, while McComas and Nelke had one.
The Eagles were back in action on Monday and lost 3-0 to Park Vista Community High School and 2-1 to St. Thomas Aquinas High School on Thursday. MSD will then play their next game on April 1 against American Heritage High School at 5 p.m. The Patriots are 9-1 this year and rank seventh in the state.
