Spring sports are officially underway in Parkland, with several teams from Marjory Stoneman Douglas recording their first win.
The softball team picked up two wins during the preseason and then dominated in their season-opening game. The Eagles beat Charles W. Flanagan High School on Thursday to improve to 1-0. Lucia Perez led the way with five RBIs while eight players drove in runs, including two from Camryn Ferro and Kaitlin Enright. Page Kalvatis, MaKenzie Degan, Antonia Nelke, Sophia McComas, Myah Boleen, and Caleigh D’Agati drove in one.
The baseball team improved to 3-1 following another tremulous game from Michael Ossenfort. After driving in five runs on Tuesday against North Broward Prep, he knocked in five more to help the Eagles erase an early 4-0 deficit highlighted by a game-deciding grand slam. They then closed the week with a victory over Belen Jesuit High School 10-5. The Eagles walked 14 times and were led by three RBIS from Drew Freeman. Lorenzo Laurel also homered while Carter McGuinn tossed three hitless innings, and Daniel Tartaglia recorded seven outs for the save.
In lacrosse, the girls team dropped their opening two games but got their first win against Archbishop McCarthy High School 19-5. Kaitlin Irwin led the way with six goals and has 11 through her first games. Aubrey Kasan also added three and scored 11, while Chloe Resnik scored four. Aubrey Kasan and Patrica Phang each had hat tricks, while Caroline Palm scored twice, and Mary Denver had one. The Eagles won Districts last season and also had a victory in Regionals after winning 15 games.
The boys lacrosse team fell to 0-3 after playing three of the top teams in the state. Zaid Popen scored the lone goal as the Eagles went 7-7 last year. The flag football team also dominated to start the year with a pair of shutout victories. They have outscored their opponents 65-0 following victories over Olympic Heights and Coral Glades.
Samantha Calavetta tossed six touchdown passes and had 320 passing yards in her last game. That comes after two passing scores in her first game, while Sophia Dal Molin has caught seven passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Calavetta also has a receiving touchdown off a pass from Alina Caravello, while Audrey Haltiwanger, Daria Boykin, Ava Kelleher, Courtney Heymach, and Diana Doherty had receiving touchdowns.
Heymach also has a rushing score as the Eagles are coming off a season in which they won their first District Championship since 2010.
In track and field, the Eagles competed at Coral Springs High School and had Connor Stallings win a pair of races. Cole Spinks, Matthew Rosenberg, Austin Khayyami, and two relay teams placed second, while 3 Colton Pattok, Avi Gabbay, and Carson Meredith placed third. Tariq Gibbs, Bryson Gittens, Roberto Martins, Jonathan Rodriguez, and Jose Perez shined.
Samanta Bandres Chourio won the 100 and 400 hurdles. At the same time, Naomi Grissette won two events and was also a part of their 4 x 100 winning relay team with Naomi Grissette, Alexis Freckleton, Samara Osouna, and Samanta Bandres Chourio. Chourio, Isabella Bayarri, Emiliana Anzures, Cecilia Gago, and Taylor Strauss took first, while two relay teams also came in second.
