Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School continued its strong run against rival Coral Springs High School this week, with multiple teams earning impressive victories.
The boys volleyball team, after starting the season 0-2, battled through five sets to secure its first win of the year against the Colts. The Eagles dropped the opening set 18-25 but responded with a 25-22 victory in the second. After falling 21-25 in the third set, MSD evened the match again with a 25-17 win before pulling out a thrilling 16-14 victory in the decisive fifth set.
The win improves the Eagles’ record to 1-2 on the season, following earlier losses to McArthur High School and Cooper City High School. MSD will return to action against Piper High School on Monday, March 9, at 4:30 p.m. The Bengals enter the matchup 0-3 and have yet to win a set this season.
The flag football team also delivered a statement performance Tuesday, shutting out Coral Springs 48-0. AB Puccio threw five touchdown passes, while Elayna Garzon added two touchdown passes of her own after also seeing time at quarterback. Avery Shah hauled in two touchdown receptions, and Caitlin Taylor, Garzon, Courtney Heymach, Ava Kelleher, and Noa Rachimi each added one.
The Eagles followed that performance with another dominant win, defeating Deerfield Beach High School 46-0. Puccio threw six more touchdown passes in the victory. Haltiwanger caught two touchdown passes, while Avery Shah, Mickayla Sugrano, Caitlyn Taylor, and Rachimi each added one. Ariel Kauffman recorded a pick-six, while Alina Carvello. Sugrano, and Shah each had interceptions. Katie Diaz, Jordan Tessler, and Adrianna Primiterra also contributed with sacks.
The Eagles improved to 7-1 and rank 14th nationally, with their only loss coming in tournament play. Earlier this season, MSD recorded victories over Nova High School, Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory, Coral Glades, McArthur High School, and Cooper City High School. MSD will face Coral Glades again in their next game on Tuesday, March 10, at 4:30 p.m. The Jaguars have a 2-5 record this year and lost 40-0 in the lone meeting last year.
The track and field teams have competed in four meets over the past two weeks, including one hosted in Coral Springs, where the Eagles tied for fifth place with 74 points alongside the Colts. Individually, Robert Martone won the 1600 meters, while Avi Gabbay captured first place in the high jump. Jaide Walcott placed second in the high jump, and Matthew Rosenberg, Sergio Lozano, and Gianni Waca each recorded third-place finishes in their respective events. On the girls’ side, Isabella Bayarri won the 400 meters, Alexys Caropreso captured first in the 800 meters, and Emiliana Anzures finished second.
At a meet hosted by Dillard High School, Rosenberg placed second in the 3200 meters. Paul Desmornes and Sergio Lozano were runners-up in the hurdles, while Jose Perez finished second in the javelin. Austin Khayami added a third-place finish in the triple jump. The girls’ team also tied for fourth place in the competition.
