Two Parkland boys helped rescue a dog trapped in a canal Thursday night.
The dog’s back legs were caught under thick mud in the canal off 72nd Way in Pine Tree Estates, where the animal was partially submerged.
Breckan Fee, 14, and his friend Chase Hanselman, 12, were riding their bikes near the canal around sundown when they noticed a rustling in the water.
Fee heard the scared, barking pup and saw it was in trouble. He called his mother, Chrissy Fee, to tell her the dog needed help.
The Parkland mom sprang into action, calling 911 and posting a photo of the black and brown pup on Facebook — in case it’s owner was searching for it.
Broward Sheriff’s Office Parkland District deputies arrived and pulled the dog out of the canal, Chrissy Fee said. The canine was found wearing a brown, studded collar.
Video taken at the scene shows the dog walking with a limp beside deputies, its back legs possibly injured.
Parkland Mayor Rich Walker saw Fee’s Facebook post and notified the city’s fire department.
Authorities said they would take the dog to a station, clean, and feed it.
It was not known how long the dog had been stuck in the canal.
Fee said she was proud of her son for helping the trapped canine.
“It was nice that he went out of his way to help this dog,” she said.
