Officials said that Parkland Commissioner Bob Mayersohn was honored by the Florida League of Cities for his work and advocacy efforts during Florida’s 2023 legislative session.
The league, which advocates for Florida’s municipal governments, awarded Mayersohn a 2023 Home Rule Hero Award for his work “throughout the session to promote local voices making local choices, protect the Home Rule powers of Florida’s municipalities, and advance the League’s legislative agenda,” league officials said in a written announcement.
“The League and its legislative team appreciate the individual advocacy efforts undertaken by municipal officials throughout the state,” said Florida League of Cities Chief of Legislative Affairs Casey Cook. “Home Rule Heroes are some of our biggest advocates for protecting local decision-making. They are League members who stand out for their high level of participation, knowledge, and effectiveness. “
Home Rule is the legally recognized ability of municipalities to enact their own ordinances. It governs locally as they see fit, with minimal state interference, so long as they abide by state and federal laws.
According to the league, Home Rule Hero Award recipients are local government officials, both elected and appointed, who “consistently responded to the League’s request to reach out to members of the Legislature and help give a local perspective on an issue” the announcement states.
“I am honored again to be recognized by the Florida League of Cities as a Home Rule Hero for the fourth consecutive year,” Mayersohn said. “The importance of protecting Home Rule is to continue to preserve the voices of our residents when making local decisions.”
Mayersohn serves as president of the Broward League of Cities, serves on the Florida League of Cities Board of Directors, and chairs the Municipal Administration Legislative Policy Committee, according to the announcement.
