A 22-year-old New Jersey man was arrested for making multiple swatting calls about homes in Parkland, prompting large law enforcement responses to his false reports of shootings, authorities said Tuesday.
In August 2024, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies in Parkland responded to reports of shootings at two different residences. One call said the victim was shot in the chest and being held hostage. In another incident, the caller said he had shot his sister, according to BSO.
Once on the scene of both incidents, deputies said they quickly determined the reports were unfounded. No one was injured.
The caller who made the false reports, later identified as Justin Flavien of Maywood, New Jersey, made efforts to conceal his identity through various computer apps, phone numbers, and technology, detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Threat Management Unit (TMU) said.
TMU investigators and BSO Real Time Crime Center detectives used high-tech sleuthing to identify the caller as Flavien, according to BSO.
TMU investigators said they coordinated with the Maywood Police Department to obtain search warrants for Flavien’s residence. Inside, authorities found multiple electronic devices and learned Flavien may have committed similar hoaxes throughout the country, investigators said.
On Jan. 21, Flavien was taken into custody by the Maywood Police Department, according to BSO. On February 7, he was extradited to Broward County.
Flavien is charged with two counts of making a false report concerning a bomb, explosive, or weapon of mass destruction and two counts of use of a two-way communication device to facilitate or further the commission of a felony offense, authorities said.
He was freed from the Broward Main Jail on a $30,000 bond on Feb. 8, according to court records. The records do not indicate whether he has entered a plea.
