Parkland’s Mayor for a Month Program Gives Students a Look Inside Local Government 3

Parkland students interested in government and community leadership can learn firsthand what it takes to lead a city through the Mayor for a Month program.

Open to Parkland residents in grades six through 12, the program allows a selected student to shadow the mayor at City Commission meetings, community events, and presentations. Students may participate whether they attend a public, private, or charter school or are homeschooled.

The student mayor is formally introduced and sworn in during a City Commission meeting before spending one month attending activities with the mayor. The student will also have opportunities to discuss current city issues, ask questions and participate in community celebrations.

Applicants must submit a completed application, a signed letter of reference and an essay of no more than 250 words explaining why they want to become involved in municipal government. Applications should also include information about scholastic achievements, extracurricular activities and community involvement.

The application package currently posted by the city lists dates for the 2026 selection cycle.

The deadline is September 24, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
