Healthy pet, healthy you — That’s the motto of one local store owner who believes it all goes together.
Nestled next to Publix in the Coral Creek Shops, petNmind Raw Pet Food & Supplies provides owners a one-stop-shop for all their pets’ needs.
Since 2016, the holistic, natural pet food store has focused on quality and nutrition as a healthier alternative to the items found on the shelves of big-box retailers.
Now, with retail stores closing indefinitely, petNmind owner Adrian Archie wants to help the community by giving them peace of mind that their pets will be healthy and taken care of.
Adrian, who lives in Parkland with his wife, Melia, a privacy attorney, and two daughters, graduated from the University of Richmond with a degree in psychology after switching from pre-vet.
For the better part of his life, Adrian played football — and for a brief time, professionally. He later spent ten years in medical device sales but was determined to return to his passion for working with animals.
With two Abyssinian cats, a Chihuahua and a Doberman, it’s no secret Adrian is an animal lover.
“People love their pets, and if you want to make sure your pet has a long healthy life, one of the best ways to do that is to feed them the proper things,” said Adrian.
Without a holistic natural store present to educate and offer only quality products, the pets in that community will suffer because most pet food on the market is subpar, even the most popular brands, he said.
PetNmind fills that space because nutrition is often never addressed adequately or clearly in traditional pet care or big-box pet stores and grocery stores.
“We offer quality items that are proper for dogs and cats to eat, but what we really do differently is to educate.”
Adrian finds that most knowledge about pet nutrition comes from misleading commercials and labels as well as biased sources.
This lack of knowledge can result in high medical bills related to skin issues, digestive problems, and hip and joint issues, among many other common ailments.
In most cases, it all goes back to nutrition.
“So we educate people on that,” he said. “We empower them, and we offer quality products as well. That’s the premise of the store.”
With everything that is going on in the world now with the COVID-19 pandemic, pet supply stores are deemed essential businesses and can stay open. With petNmind’s convenient location — in the Publix Shopping Center, Adrian wants to do whatever he can for pet parents.
In addition to providing curbside pick-up, petNmind is delivering supplies for free within five square miles of the store. For residents further than five miles away, there is a $10 charge.
“Those are things we can do to help the community until hopefully, we get this all figured out,” he said.
PetNmind also offers a self-service dog wash, great for parents who wash their dog, but hate the hassle of home bathing or do not like the expensive full-service grooming options.
At $10 per dog, including shampoo, conditioner, and use of the blow dryer, it’s simple to use and takes a lot of the work away. All that’s needed is a towel.
“I used to have to give my Doberman a bath in the shower, which was such a hassle,” said Adrian.
He said the process of bathing dogs in the store, where the soap comes out with the water, makes it much simpler. It’s fun for younger people, and the older ones appreciate it because it takes stress off of them physically. It’s not expensive, and it’s easy to do.
Adrian feels there’s a significant need in the community for improvement in pet health. People love their pets, but unfortunately, most are unhealthy, which is why he partnered with a dental clinic providing non-anesthetic cleanings.
“If you don’t want your pet to go under anesthesia to get their teeth cleaned, this is a great option. It’s much cheaper, easier to do and painless,” said Adrian. “We’re a one-stop-shop – proper food, proper hygiene, and proper dental health.”
