Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball won again on Tuesday behind a no-hitter from senior Christian Rodriguez against Naples High School.
The University of Florida signee faced just one over the minimum, striking out 13 for the team’s 18th straight win to start the season.
“It’s a great feeling,” Rodriguez said. “Knowing I was able to give my team that extra cherry on top of a great game is awesome. They always give me the run support I need and put up great at-bats against a very good team. I really can’t thank the coaching staff and team enough for putting me in such a great position to excel like they have all year.”
The lone base runner for Naples came in the third, also when MSD scored their first run. Christian’s cousin, Alex Rodriguez, stole third base and came around on the errant throw. Devin Fitz-Gerald then singled home a run in the seventh in the fifth to double the lead. Christian and Niko Benestad also had hits for MSD, who enters the final part of their schedule ranked number two in the country.
“I couldn’t be happier for Christian,” Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. “To throw a no-hitter is truly special. He was one pitch away from a perfect game. He is the man.”
MSD is set to face Western Branch High School on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. before heading on the road on Friday against Flanagan High School.
