Students who are entering grades 5-8 who want to play in the band or orchestra or those who want to sharpen their skills are welcome to join the Westglades-Coral Springs Middle School Summer Band Camp
Held June 17 – 20 at Westglades Middle School, The program is run by the directors of the Coral Springs Middle Band and the Westglades Middle Band and Orchestra.
According to Garrett Sullivan, the Westglades band director who will lead the camp, incoming students with no musical experience will be allowed to try various instruments to see which one is right for them.
“We will hear how each student plays various instruments and help them choose the instrument they will be successful with. For example, if we see they have a good tempo, we might recommend percussion. If they can make a good sound on a trumpet, we recommend they pursue brass instruments,” said Sullivan.
For students who are already part of a middle school band program, the camp offers a chance to elevate their skills. They will receive lessons from experienced musicians and clinicians, ensuring a high musical education and growth standard.
“This will be a fun educational music camp, and students will have an opportunity to learn from professional musicians,” said Sullivan.
Westglades Middle is located at 11000 Holmberg Road in Parkland. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, with a student concert at 2 p.m. The cost per student is $350.
