The City of Parkland was awarded $1.5 million on Wednesday from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Parks and Open Space Grant Program, which helps local communities meet growth challenges, support viable community development, and protect natural resources and open space.
These funds will partially reimburse the city for the purchase of 24 acres on the northeast corner of Nob Hill Road and Hillsboro Boulevard, which, along with the 11.2-acre adjacent land already owned by the city, gives the city 36-acres for a future park.
Budget and Grants Manager Sherri Toops led the city’s efforts to secure the grant award.
Mayor Rich Walker shared a thank you message on social media to her and Congressman Ted Deutch, State Senator Tina Polsky, State Representative Christine Hunschofsky, and Vice Mayor Michael Udine for their support during the process.
During strategic planning, the commission approved a $20 million loan for the new 36-acre park and to improve existing parks.
The funds to repay the remaining debt will come from the current half-cent sales tax and utility service tax and shouldn’t pose any additional cost to residents.
Development of the new 36-acre park should commence in October after the budget is approved.
