Cherished Parkland Principal Embarks Upon New Chapter in His Career 2

Since Heron Heights Elementary opened its doors in 2009, there has been one constant: Principal Kenneth King.

The inaugural principal at the Parkland elementary school admired by students, parents and staff has announced the end of his eight-year reign in a letter to Heron Heights’ families on September 12.

“I have been recommended as a candidate for director, in the Office of School of Performance and Accountability,” said King, who shared how grateful he was and how much he is looking forward to a new chapter in his professional career. The official appointment took place at the school board meeting on Tuesday.

Parents took to Facebook to share their admiration for their school’s leader.

“He has been a true partner since day one of our experience at Heron Heights Elementary,” said Heron Heights’ parent Jenny Alfonso.

“Lily’s High School graduation won’t be the same without you,” said Nicole McGee.

One parent said she was absolutely devastated, while another announced, “Congratulations on your new job Mr. King! You will be greatly missed at HHE!”

Whether discussing student-centered initiatives or praising supportive parents, King’s consistent focus has been “One Team, One Goal,” the motto he developed at the school. This appointment wasn’t the first time King has been recognized for his commitment to the school. He was named a finalist for Principal of the Year in 2017.

Kenneth King earned his bachelor’s degree in biological anthropology from Emory University and a master’s in educational leadership from American University. He officially begins his new role on November 1.

The district is in the process of working on a transition plan to fill his position at Heron Heights.

According to Parkland resident Beth McCarthy, “The school won’t be the same without Principal King’s caring smile and spirit to greet our children every morning.”
