Parkland Organization Holds Free Workshop on Suicide Prevention, Substance Abuse and Trauma

A free workshop on suicide prevention, substance abuse and trauma will be held on September 25 by the Make our Schools Safe organization.

The event called “Keeping our Community Safe Workshop” features expert speakers Billie Morgan of 2-1-1 Broward, Emilia Vilaire-Monchery Prevention Specialist with United Way of Broward County and Dr Scott Poland Ph.D. of Nova Southeastern University, who is a nationally recognized expert on school crisis, youth violence, suicide intervention, self-injury, school safety and threat assessment.

Lori Alhadeff, founder of Make our School Safe and school board member-elect, said that education is key to awareness and keeping our children safe.

“Suicide increases after a tragedy,” she said, adding those in attendance will learn how to deal with trauma and how to avoid putting their own stress on their children. They will also learn techniques to use to help children deal with trauma.

Alhadeff said that juuling, or vaping, is a huge epidemic in our schools and parents will learn prevention strategies from the experts.

“Education is key to prevention,” she said.

The workshop is held on Tuesday, September 25 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Watercrest Clubhouse at 8790 Watercrest Circle West in Parkland.
