Construction of a 150-acre preserve dedicated to the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas massacre is now underway with a gate, walkways, turf, and statues.
Adjacent to the preserve located on the former Heron Bay golf course will be the site of the Parkland 17 Memorial, which will commemorate those who died on February 14, 2018.
Owned and maintained by the North Springs Improvement District, the preserve will feature a welcome center with meeting rooms, a hydrating station, statues, and a memorial.
The site, designed to be accessible to the public during daylight and early evening hours, is located behind the former Heron Bay golf cart shack and clubhouse and will be on land in both Coral Springs and Parkland.
Michael Moser, Foundation Chair and Deputy Fire Chief at Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department said the site is currently a construction zone and is uncertain if some areas will be accessible before the memorial’s completion.
Parkland Talk reported on February 8 that six proposals for the new memorial are under consideration, with a decision expected at the board’s March meeting.
“We would love to break ground in 2024,” Moser said, adding that the completion time is unknown and depends on the chosen proposal.
The memorial has no budget, and funding is currently open at the Parkland 17 Memorial Site.
