Parkland Vice Mayor Ken Cutler and professor Frank J. Cavaioli are holding a book signing event for “A History of Parkland, Florida,” and the public is welcome to attend.

Held on Sunday, August 21, at 3 p.m. at Aston Gardens, the book signing is a chance for the residents to meet the writers, get a personal message on their copy of the book, and learn more about the process of its creation.

A 300-page paperback is currently the “#1 New Release” in the History of Education books on Amazon. The book is also available in Kindle format.

Cutler said he was very proud to be able to collaborate with a history professor and author Frank Cavaioli on a book about the city they both love.

“The history of Parkland has always been a passion of mine. I have been very involved with the Parkland Historical Society and Parkland Friends of the Library and authored several articles about the city’s history,” he added.

Cutler explained that professor Cavaioli approached him in 2015 with the idea of writing a book together. “He had written about Pompano in the past and wanted to write another book about local history, but he really didn’t have a finger on the pulse of Parkland history as I did,” he added.

Cavaioili brought him an outline of a manuscript, and the work had begun. With the full-time job as a practicing attorney and his duties on the city commission, writing the book was a part-time thing, but Cutler had a bit more time to work on it during the pandemic, when he, like many other people, switched to work from home.

Cutler, who had never published a book before, said it had been a fantastic experience for him, and he learned a lot about the city’s history and publishing.

Professor Cavaioli, a 92-year-old Aston Gardens resident, had lived in Parkland since 2013. He worked as a professor of history and politics at Farmingdale State University, NY. He authored several books in the past, including the history of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and Pompano Park Harness Track.

Cutler said that many people, even those who live in the city, do not know much about its history, Parkland’s agricultural roots, and the fights and battles that the past commissions had while trying to maintain the quality of life in the city.

“Everyone reading the book, whether they are an old or a new resident, will learn something new about the history of Parkland and what makes it unique,” he added.
