The Not My Daughter… Find a Cure Now! Cancer awareness fundraising event returns this fall for the 15th annual shopping boutique and luncheon.
Held on Monday, October 28, at 10 a.m. at Fort Lauderdale Marriott Coral Springs Hotel & Convention Center, the Not My Daughter event includes a shopping boutique at 10 a.m., followed by a luncheon with a special speaker at noon. Tickets are $125 a person or $225 for the VIPink option, which includes a gift.
Guests are encouraged to purchase their tickets by Monday, October 14.
This year’s “When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Pink Lemonade” themed luncheon will include a fashion show sponsored by Lululemon, with breast cancer survivors as models on the runway. Johanna Torres, NBC6 South Florida Today anchor and breast cancer survivor, will serve as the event’s emcee.
Founding member Denyse Hostig said last year’s Not My Daughter event raised over $200,000, adding that it is humbling and exciting to see the organization’s work impact the local community and cancer patients’ lives.
The non-profit started as a grassroots cancer awareness charity group in 2010, when Hostig, a Parkland resident, was diagnosed with breast cancer. A group of 15 of her friends, channeling a desire to support Hostig in her battle and help other patients, planned the first luncheon and shopping event that year to bring awareness to breast cancer.
In the first year, Not My Daughter sold 550 tickets and had close to 800 attendees, including all vendors. The luncheons have sold out yearly since raising funds for the NMD Patient Support Services Center at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Another founding member, Jody Sternfield, said Not My Daughter is 100 percent volunteer-driven. The founders and members do not take a salary. The organization uses in-kind donations and tries to keep event costs to a minimum.
“Not My Daughter brings together generations supporting each other, unified in the purpose to build a future that brings a cure for breast cancer,” Sternfield added.
The non-profit opened its first Patient Support Services Center in Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Plantation in 2019. The center provides ancillary services for breast cancer patients and survivors, including wigs, therapy sessions, exercise counseling, and nutrition consultations.
“From funding research and pre-vivor screening to providing help through Not My Daughter Resource Centers, we are motivated by the progress we have made and by the community support that inspires us and fuels our mission to eradicate breast cancer before it reaches the next generation,” said Hostig.
