The Marjory Stoneman Douglas girls’ cross-country team earned fifth place out of 32 teams at the Spanish River Invitational on September 20 in Boca Raton.
Coach Michael Mauro said he was ecstatic with the results. “Six of our varsity runners and one of our junior varsity runners were under 23 minutes. We are doing better than I expected, and I believe we are well on our way to qualifying for the state championship,” said Mauro.
The top runners for the Eagles girls’ team included Emily Anzures, Lola Simcox, and Alexys Caropreso. The junior varsity team earned second place in their race.
“We have much talent, and we push each other in every practice. We are looking forward to the upcoming city championship meet on September 25,” said Mauro.
The boys’ team also ran well and earned 16th place overall. Matt Rosenberg and Roberto Martinez were the top runners for the Eagles. Mauro said he was proud of the effort the boys’ runners made and believed they would run well in the upcoming meets.
All of the runners are looking forward to the upcoming Northwest Area Cross-Country Championships at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek on September 25. The high school cross-country teams from Coral Springs, Parkland, and Coconut Creek are expected to participate. There will also be a middle school competition.
