Marjory Stoneman Douglas Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald has something special going on.
Not only is he trying to lead his varsity baseball team to a third straight State Championships, his two sons, Devin, a junior at MSD, and Hunter, a 2019 graduate from MSD, have already won two outstanding awards.
Devin was named MVP of the BCAA Championship Game for the Eagles in their most recent tournament. The NC State commit, who missed most of last season with an injury, shined with both the bat and glove against J.P. Taravella. He recorded two hits and drove in three runs during the Eagles’ 11-1 over the Trojans.
Devin is hitting .429 this year, with four RBIs and three runs scored in four games. The Eagles are now 4-0 and rank among the top teams in the country.
Hunter was initially named Sun Belt Player of the Week for Old Dominion after hitting his first home run in the team’s win on February 21 against Virginia Military Institute. He finished the week with three homers. He hit .444 and raised his season batting average by over .150 points while driving in 11 runs and slugging .889.
Hunter followed that up with another incredible couple of games and was named National Player of the Week on Monday. He hit five more home runs and has eight this season, leading the nation in total bases with 54. Hunter is also ranked second in the country with 54 RBIs and is currently batting .424 this year.

“It’s really rewarding to see them both having success on the field of play and also in the classroom,” said Fitz-Gerald.” They work extremely hard and are highly motivated individuals. I couldn’t be happier for both of them. They both have their own separate journeys, and they both are doing very well. Let’s hope they continue to get better every day.”
The varsity team continues to their dominant start, with the University of Florida commit Jayden Dubanewitz on the mound against Miami Springs on March 2. MSD was locked in a 2-2 game before Matt Ossenfort not only drove in the game-winning run but also drove in two more with an RBI double in the sixth. Rylan Lujo and Dillon Moquin also knocked in runs in the Eagles’ 7-2 win. The Eagles then dominated Deerfield Beach on Tuesday for their sixth win, with Brayden McCluskey recording his first varsity win with Lujo knocking in three runs with his first homer of the season.
Also, the Westglades Middle School baseball club is undefeated this year. Not only are they 5-0 with a pair three complete game shutouts, but the Wolves also defeated their rival American Heritage 9-0. They have outscired their opponents 43-5 this year.
