The Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches to send 20 at-risk, underserved children touched by gun violence to summer camp in Broward County.
The Memorial Fund, created in honor of Marjory Stoneman Douglas teacher Scott Beigel whose life was taken by a mass shooter on February 14, 2018, will be providing the youth ranches with a grant of $15,000 to help change the lives of these children in need and show them positive alternatives to the scourge of gangs and gun violence.
Founded by Scott’s mother, Linda Beigel Schulman, the fund has sent 431 at-risk, underserved children touched by gun violence to summer sleep-away camps in four different states over the past five years.
“Scott was a geography teacher, a cross-country coach, a mentor, a summer camp counselor, and someone who changed the lives of his students and campers. Scott was a hero who saved the lives of his students, that horrible today. I knew immediately that I wanted to honor his life, memory, and legacy. “
The partnership with the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches marks the first time the fund will send at-risk children from Florida to camp the week of July 31 through August 7. The children, ages ten to 15, will also be given top priority to attend the camp the following summer.
Scott Beigel Memorial Fund 5K Run/Walk
To honor Scott Beigel’s legacy, they are hosting an annual 5K Run/Walk to raise money for their cause on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Pine Trails Park in Parkland. This year’s event will include a 1K fun run for kids, a 5K, and a 10K.
The male and female winners of the 5K and 10K will receive a $1,000 gift certificate to Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa. There will also be cash gift cards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners (male and female) in the 5K and 10k ($100, $75, $50).
The event will also feature fun activities and prizes along the course, including special guests such as Stanley from the Florida Panthers and Billy from the Miami Marlins.
Attendees can also enjoy the hospitality area, which is sponsored by Office Evolution and will offer seating, tables, and snacks for all. The event is about inclusion for all levels, and attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite superhero for extra fun during the day.
Schulman said, “It will be another beautiful spring day here in Parkland as we come together as one big family, give each other a collective hug, and honor Scott Beigel’s legacy of protecting and teaching our children.”
