Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduate Roman Anthony has officially signed an eight-year extension worth $130 million with the Boston Red Sox.
“I wanted to play in Boston for a long time, “Anthony said during a press conference. “ I haven’t won anything yet. But for me, over these last two months, the baseball we’re playing and fans showing up every night is amazing. It’s a place like no other, and for me, it was simple: I just wanted to be here and play baseball in Boston.”
The contract can reach up to $230 million, with incentives to keep the 2022 MSD graduate in Boston. Anthony was drafted in the second round of the 2022 MLB draft after his heroics with the Eagles. During his time, he won a pair of State and National Championships. Anthony hit 15 home runs during those two seasons and also had 20 doubles and 61 RBIs before being named Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior.
He went on to be become the top prospect in baseball and hit 42 home runs and drove in 170 runs before Anthony was called up to the Boston Red Sox earlier this summer. He is currently hitting .278 with two home runs and 19 RBIs. Anthony had his first hit come against Ryan Pepoit and his first home run against Logan Gilbert. He recently had his first walk-off hit of his major league career against the Houston Astros.
Currently, the Red Sox sit in second place in the AL East with a record of 64-52, four games back of the Toronto Blue Jays. They are set to begin a three-game weekend series starting on Friday, August 8, against the San Diego Padres.
