2025 Make Our Schools Safe event {MOSS}
Eight years after the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the nonprofit Make Our Schools Safe continues its mission to improve school safety nationwide and will mark the milestone with its signature fundraiser this spring.
The organization will host the 2026 Live for Alyssa Gala: An Evening in Paradise on Saturday, April 11, at Margaritaville Beach Resort in Hollywood, bringing together community leaders, advocates, and supporters to honor lives lost while supporting efforts to protect students across the country.
Make Our Schools Safe, commonly known as MOSS, was founded in 2018 by Lori and Illan Alhadeff after their daughter, Alyssa, was among the 17 victims killed in the Feb. 14, 2018, Parkland school shooting.
The organization focuses on prevention and preparedness, and on empowering students to help create safer school environments.
Since its founding, MOSS has helped advance Alyssa’s Law in 10 states, legislation requiring panic alert systems in schools to speed emergency response times. The organization has also reinvested nearly $1 million into South Florida schools to support security and preparedness improvements, including fencing, security huts, Stop the Bleed kits, and leadership training programs.
Nationally, MOSS Clubs and student leadership programs continue to encourage students to promote safety, kindness, and responsibility within their schools.
The annual gala typically draws about 275 business and community leaders, advocates, and supporters. Funds raised support school safety initiatives, student leadership development, and prevention-focused programs nationwide.
“This gala is about honoring Alyssa’s legacy through action,” said Lori Alhadeff, co-founder and CEO of Make Our Schools Safe. “Every year, this event allows us to reflect on how far we’ve come, while also recommitting ourselves to the work still ahead. Together, we are creating safer schools and stronger communities.”
