The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team played in three more games this week and picked up two more wins.
The Eagles opened the week with a come-from-behind victory against West Orange High School. MSD scored the first two runs of the game but allowed five unanswered runs to fall behind 5–2. The Eagles responded with two runs in the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth to reclaim the lead. MSD’s top five hitters — Cade Raley, Jake Rizzo, Ander Elorriaga, Randy Ruiz, and Lorenzo Laurel — all recorded RBIs, while the game-winning run scored on a wild pitch.
The Eagles followed that performance with another dominant showing in Fort Myers. Gio Rojas shined on the mound, striking out 11 batters over 4.2 perfect innings against Neumann High School. MSD carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and secured a 10–0 victory. Ruiz led the offense with a home run and finished with two RBIs alongside Raley, while Tyler Stertzbach and Josh Sullivan also contributed on the mound to complete the game.
MSD, though, suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night against Christopher Columbus High School. The Eagles fell behind 4-0 and rallied for three in the fifth, but left the bases loaded. They had runners on first and third in the seventh, but a base running mistake led to the final out of the game on what would have been a sacrifice fly from Laurel.
Next, MSD will play Cypress Bay High School in the first game of the BCAA Championship on Monday, February 23, at 4 p.m. These teams met in Regionals last year, with MSD sweeping the best-of-three series after wins of 3-0 and 6-2.
