Game-winning home-run by Marjory Stoneman Douglas Baseball {Gineska Ordonez}
By: Matt Rothman
For the first time since 2016, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team is on their way to the State Championship following their 6-4 win over Palm Beach Gardens Saturday night on a walk-off home run from Santiago Ordonez.
The Eagles came into this game with a 24-2 record and had one of their losses come against Palm Beach Gardens. However, with the season on the line, they were able to get revenge for their 25th win of the year.
After an incredible start from Christian Rodriguez in the Regional Semifinals, Christian Arroyo was handed the ball in the final. He was sharp early as he threw three scoreless innings before MSD took a 3-0 lead.
Chris Mckenna started the inning with a walk and scored on a double from Roman Anthony. Later in the inning, both Ordonez and Jake Clemente each had RBI doubles though Palm Beach Gardens responded with a two-run home run in the fourth inning and then a two-out RBI hit to tie the game at three.
Palm Beach Gardens then not only knocked Arroyo out of the game in the fourth, but they also took the lead on a bases-loaded walk. Derek Rodriguez managed to limit the damage to one as he got a fly out to end the fifth.
Sam Beir came in and worked out of a jam in the seventh before Gavin Conticello tied the game with an RBI double with the Eagles down to their final strike. Ordonez then hit a walk-off two-run home run to win the game.
MSD will play in the State Championship on Friday, May 21 at. 4 p.m. against Christopher Columbus High School.
