The Marjory Stoneman Douglas football team picked up their first win of the season on Friday in the Pig Bowl against Coral Springs High School.
This victory was the ninth straight year the Eagles defeated the Colts, but fortunately for CSHS principal Dwayne Dixon, there was no pig to kiss this year, just a mascot on the sideline.
With their Head Coach, Chris Baldwin, back on the sidelines following his hip injury, the Eagles scored two quick touchdowns and took a 14-7 lead behind rushing touchdowns from Nick Maresca and Xavier Velez. MSD was about to take a two-score lead but instead fumbled, allowing the Colts to run it back for 99 yards. However, Rocco Duygulu responded with a 36-yard field goal, putting MSD ahead 17-13.
Duygula added another field goal in the second half before the Eagles took off, with Jonah Lennamon recording a 35-yard rushing touchdown and Jaxson Anger connecting with Nick Brown for a 7-yard touchdown in the team’s 34-13 victory.
MSD will play another rivalry game against Coral Springs Charter on Thursday, October 24, at 6 p.m., the first matchup between these two teams since 2008. The Panthers are 2-4 this year with wins over Pompano Beach and Northeast High School. The Eagles also postponed another game against Spanish River Community High School earlier this week. They will make it up on November 6 at 6 p.m.
