Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduate Jesus Luzardo turned in a Labor Day masterpiece, tossing a two-hit complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

The performance lowered Luzardo’s ERA to 2.87, which ranks seventh in the National League, while his 221 strikeouts in 178.2 innings rank second in the NL. It was another highlight in a career year for Luzardo, who was selected to the MLB All-Star Game for the first time earlier this season and improved to 14-5. This was also the first complete game of Luzardo’s big league career.

Luzardo starred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, where he compiled a 23-5 record during his high school career before being selected in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals.

He was later traded to the Oakland Athletics and made his major league debut in 2019. Now in his seventh MLB season, Luzardo has become a key piece of the Phillies’ rotation as Philadelphia continues its push toward the postseason.
