Do you have what it takes to match wits with Mayor Rich Walker? Now’s your chance to make your move.
Offered as a free and friendly series of meet-ups in cities across Broward County, the event was initially created by Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan in cooperation with mayors from throughout South Florida to draw attention to the benefits of playing chess.
“It’s a great event. Kudos to Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan for spearheading this year after year,” said city spokesperson Todd DeAngelis, adding that the kids and elected officials love it. “And let’s face it, it’s fun watching a child beat an adult at chess—which happens more than you might think.”
DeAngelis said the atmosphere at the Chess Challenge every year is so much fun, and when you sit across the table and play chess with someone, you develop a connection with that person on some level.
“It’s a human experience, and chess is the vehicle. If you’ve been to one, you know. If you haven’t been to one, you have to go.”
Never played chess before? No worries.
For attendees who are new to the game and would like to participate, there will be free lessons and instructions available at the event. All you must do to participate is show up to the event ready to learn one of the oldest games ever played.
Whether you’re a novice or a chess connoisseur, you may even be able to leave the event saying you matched wits with the Mayor of Parkland himself.
The Parkland leg of the Mayors’ Chess Challenge takes place on Saturday, January 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Parkland Recreation and Enrichment Center (PREC) at 10559 Trails End.
