A Message from Mayor Rich Walker
As you prepare for the new school year, get into a mindset that will allow you to always continue to learn and grow. In many cases, the attitudes we adopt as we enter the new school year will help set the tone for our experiences throughout the rest of the year.
For example, take a moment to think about the magnitude of the preparation involved in getting our schools up and running for a new school year this fall. Remember to show respect and appreciation to teachers, school administrators, and classmates. When we make a point to focus during class, complete assignments on time, and follow school rules, we are demonstrating that we are committed to our education and value the people who make up our school community.
Setting goals before school starts is also a great way to establish markers for academic and personal growth. Think about ways you can hold yourself accountable for maintaining or improving your grades. You could also consider joining a club or sports team or volunteering in the community.
Here are a few quick pointers for setting goals before the start of school:
- Get in touch with a friend before school starts so that you have a point of connection.
- Eat a healthy diet.
- Start going to sleep at a time that allows you to be well-rested for the school day.
- Establish a study space at home.
- If you aren’t using an alarm to wake up, consider using one now.
- Adopt overall habits that help you take care of yourself physically and mentally.
Make the most of the few weeks ahead to approach the new school year with positivity, determination, and kindness. If we strive to be kind and caring to those around us—especially those struggling with personal or academic challenges—we can make a positive difference in the lives of others and foster a sense of community within our schools that will last all year long.
