Parkland Homeowners Face Higher Bills Despite Flat Millage Rate

Parkland homeowners may not see a millage rate increase in Fiscal Year (FY) 2027.

City Manager Nancy Morando has recommended a millage rate of 4.2979, unchanged for the past six years; however, homeowners could still see higher property taxes because of increased home assessments, according to the Parkland budget book.

The FY 2027 General Fund budget is $60,800,000, an increase of $2,000,000 or 3.4% over last year’s budget. Taxable values rose 4.8%, with existing values up 4.4% and $31.7 million in new taxable value added to the tax roll, according to the budget book.

The fire assessment increased from $327.06 to $340.14 for residential units. Based on a 2022 study and the commission’s direction, the assessment will increase each year in step with the Coral Springs Fire Department contract, according to the budget book.

The solid waste assessment is $495.48 for each residential unit. This is a $22.80 increase over last year. The solid waste assessment is a pass-through charge that increases annually, as shown in the Waste Management contract and the budget book.

The city has 115 full-time and 39 part-time positions. Three vacant full-time positions were eliminated, and one part-time position for Wedge Preserve Park was added. Parkland contracts with the Coral Springs Fire Department for fire and emergency response services. The contract increased 4% to $11 million, and there are 44 fire suppression and EMS staff members, plus 1 fire inspector, according to the budget book.

Parkland contracts with the Broward Sheriff’s Office for a full range of police services. The annual contract increased 7.6%, continuing to include salary range adjustments from a recent compensation study. The total service cost is $15 million for the year, according to the budget book.

The commission will hold a budget workshop meeting on Wednesday, August 12, at 5:00 p.m. to discuss the Parkland budget and an initial public hearing on the FY 2027 budget on Monday, September 14, at 5:01 p.m.

The city will hold a final public hearing on Wednesday, September 23, at 6:00 p.m. All meetings will take place at the Parkland City Hall commission chambers.
