The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team was tested by West Broward High School but ultimately advanced to the State Championship for the sixth straight year.
In the opening game, the Eagles scored three runs in the first and fourth innings to jump out to a 6-1 lead. They added one more run in the fifth as Gio Rojas did the rest, tossing another complete game with 10 strikeouts. Lorenzo Laurel, Rojas, and Ander Elorriaga all had RBIs.
In game two, Jake Rizzo sparked the offense with a grand slam in the second inning. He previously hit one in the regional Semifinals, while Laurel also homered. However, West Broward fought back and scored 12 unanswered runs after falling behind by five to even up the series.
The final game of the series featured another signature moment during this team’s run with Sean Torres, who had only 27 plate appearances this year, stepping into the lineup and hitting a three-run home run to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead. Cade Raley then added a two-run single in the third, and Randy Ruiz walked with the bases loaded for a sixth run.
Drew Boivin was lights out on the mound in only his seventh appearance of the season and kept the Bobcats off the board for 3.1 innings. Tyler Stertzbach came into the game in the fourth and left two runners stranded before finishing off the shutout. He allowed only one hit and struck out three, while Jackson Taylor added an RBI for the team’s seventh run as they head back to the State Championship later this month.
