Shayne Shapiro, 15, found the perfect solution to the “just go outside and play!” problem that many parents deal with in the summer.
His “Backyard Buddy” service offers families an hour of “active fun,” with kids playing sports in the backyard or running around.
Shayne charges $20 for an hour and says it is not a babysitting job –- a parent or a guardian must be at home the whole time.
The teen brings his own sports equipment, including volleyball, basketball, and football. However, he is open to using whatever outdoor games the families have in their backyards. He said frisbee is a popular choice.
A Heron Bay resident and sophomore at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Shayne was looking for a summer job and decided to do what he loves –- playing sports and interacting with kids. He only takes jobs in Parkland to be able to ride his bike to all appointments.
His business took off, and the parents are happy to have the help replacing the “screen time” with sports and games.
“I have been getting a lot of positive feedback. Every single parent that used the “Backyard Buddy” service had booked another appointment,” said Shayne, adding that he consistently has 5-6 clients weekly.
The teen says he is considering asking a few of his high school friends to join his business venture. Who knows, maybe a franchise or two are also in the cards.
