After overcoming injuries and working his way back to the majors, Parkland native Christian Scott celebrated a moment years in the making Saturday by earning his first big-league win against the Miami Marlins.
Scott, who lived in Parkland til he was 12 before moving to Coconut Creek, was making his 16th big-league start and earned the win following five impressive innings. The right-hander struck out eight and allowed only one run to lower his ERA to 2.97 this year.
“It took longer than I would’ve expected and wanted, but it’s nice to have that first one under my belt,” Scott said postgame. “Defense played great, and I thought Hayden Senger called a hell of a game. Offense stepped up with some big swings.”
Scott made his major league debut in 2024 after playing high school baseball at Calvary Christian Academy. He also played for the Original Florida Pokers alongside his current teammate Mark Vientos, who had a two-run double to get the scoring going.
Scott pitched at the University of Florida, where he went 12-5 career record with a 3.72 ERA. He also recorded three saves across 121 innings pitched before getting drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 MLB Draft. After skyrocketing through the minor leagues, Scott made nine starts during his rookie year before undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing a year and a half.
“We saw signs of that in 2024,” Manager Carlos Mendoza said. “I’m not surprised by it, but man, if we can get that version, which I’m pretty confident we will, that’s another factor for us to turn this thing around right there.”
After starting the year in the minor leagues, Scott was called up to the Mets in April and has established himself as a staple in the Mets’ rotation. The Mets are currently 25-33 this season and will play the final game of their three-game series on Sunday, May 31 at 1:40 p.m. Scott is scheduled to make his next start on Friday, June 5 against the San Diego Padres.
