Marjory Stoneman Douglas Names Robert Lucky New Boys Basketball Coach 6

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas boys basketball team has officially named Robert Lucky as its new varsity head coach.

“It feels like a calling,” Lucky said. “I’m excited. My family is excited. The program is excited.”

Lucky takes over for former head coach Shaune Cannon and brings extensive experience working with players at several levels of the game. He has coached across the full spectrum of youth basketball, beginning in local recreational leagues before moving into high school, AAU and national circuit competition.

Before beginning his coaching career, Lucky was a standout player growing up in Connecticut. He attended Sacred Heart High School, one of the state’s top basketball programs, and entered his senior season ranked No. 14 in Connecticut while earning several league, city, and state honors.

He continued his career at the collegiate level, playing for multiple programs before eventually graduating from Florida International University. Lucky said the challenges he faced throughout his college career helped shape how he approaches coaching today.

“Frankly speaking, I’m a better coach and leader because of that experience,” Lucky said.

Lucky also plans to bring plenty of enthusiasm to the sidelines as he takes over the Eagles.

“Fans can expect fun, intensity and high energy,” Lucky said. “I’m a vibe.”

Lucky will also have the opportunity to coach his son, Jonathan, who played on the varsity team last year.

The Eagles enter the upcoming season looking to turn things around after finishing below .500 in each of the past three years. They will also have a new-look roster after graduating five seniors from last year’s team.
