5th Annual Play For 8 Cup {Make Our Schools Safe}
The community united over the weekend for the 5th Annual Play For 8 Cup, a youth soccer tournament that blends athletic competition with a mission to promote safer schools across the country.
Hosted by Make Our Schools Safe (MOSS), the two-day event was held October 18–19 at Pine Trails Park and Cypress Park, honoring the memory of Alyssa Alhadeff, a passionate soccer player who wore the number 8 jersey. She was among the 17 victims of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.
This year’s tournament brought together 55 teams from 24 youth soccer clubs spanning Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Families, students, and community members filled the sidelines to cheer on players while supporting MOSS’s mission to empower students and communities through advocacy, education, and preparedness programs — including Alyssa’s Law and MOSS Clubs.
“This event is about more than soccer — it’s about unity, resilience, and taking action to protect our kids,” said Lori Alhadeff, co-founder and CEO of Make Our Schools Safe. “Every goal scored represents progress toward making every school in America a safe place to learn and grow.”
MOSS also thanked Bill Fisher and the Tournament Success Group for organizing the event over the past five years, helping to make the Play For 8 Cup a beloved community tradition.
Adding to the excitement, organizers highlighted the launch of World Sevens Football, which announced that Women’s Pro Soccer is coming to South Florida this December in a new 7v7 format featuring $5 million in prize money. The event will take place December 5–7 at Beyond Bancard Field in Fort Lauderdale, marking a major moment for women’s sports in the region.
Proceeds from the Play For 8 Cup will support local school safety projects, student leadership programs, and mental wellness initiatives.
