The 1200 building at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the site of a tragic mass murder in 2018, will finally be demolished six years after the incident.
The last day of school is Monday, June 10. The demolition is scheduled to begin on Thursday, June 13, or Friday, June 14, 2024, and is expected to take several weeks to complete.
Broward County School officials announced that the exact times for the demolition work will be provided soon.
In a statement, Broward County Schools expressed their sensitivity to the emotional impact of this event:
“We understand this is a sensitive and difficult time for the families of those who were killed, those who were injured, and all of those who are forever impacted by the tragedy on February 14, 2018. We will continue to keep the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School community informed and updated as we navigate this process together. This decision was reached after consultation with health and safety experts and out of concern for the well-being of students and staff on campus.”
The decision to demolish the building comes after it was preserved as a crime scene for several years during the trials of the shooter and former school resource officer Scot Peterson.
