The four-time defending State Champions, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, were back in action on Tuesday night, looking to continue their historic run in baseball. They faced Miami Killian Senior High School in their first game.
Despite losing 1-0 against the Cougars last year, the Eagles recorded a 10-0 win behind one of the top juniors in the country, with Gio Rojas tossing four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out five before Breylynn Courtney tossed a clean fifth inning.
MSD scored three runs in the first, with Nick Diaz recording an RBI single before Drew Freeman drove in two with a triple. He also added an RBI double in a seven-run fifth inning while Lorenzo Laurel plated two. Jake Rizzo, Matthew Toback, and Bennett Gary also had RBIs before Gary scored the final run on a passed ball.
“Exciting to start the year off with a win,” Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. ” Kids played well, and we’re excited to get going. Looking forward to a good year.”
MSD is coming off a season where they went 26-5 and won their four straight title. They had gone 113-9 over the past four seasons and will play one of the toughest schedules in the country once again this year. The Eagles will play True North Classic Academy in their next game on Thursday, February 13, at 6 p.m. The Titans are coming off a season where they went 13-12-1 and advanced to Regionals before losing to Trinity Christian Academy.
