Marjory Stoneman Douglas has always had a plethora of pitchers, but sophomore Gio Rojas has made a statement in his first two starts of the season.
The sophomore was officially named National Player of the Week following his incredible start against J.P. Taravella in the BCAA Tournament on February 28. He pitched 6.2 perfect innings against the Trojans, recording 18 strikeouts in a 2-0 win.
“One of the most dominant pitching performances I have ever witnessed in high school baseball in 30 years,” Head Coach Todd Fitz-Gerald said. “He is a machine strike thrower, a great kid, and a great teammate who loves the game of baseball. I couldn’t be happier for him and his success early on; he’s only going to get better.”
Through his first two starts, Rojas has pitched 12 innings after tossing the first five innings of a combined no-hitter against Miami Springs High School before his start against JPT. Rojas is committed to the University of Miami and previously pitched in Colorado before transferring to MSD this year.
The Eagles, the three-time defending State and National Champions, have won 56 straight games and are 5-0 this year. They are currently ranked number one in the nation and will play their next game on Thursday, March 7, against Jesuit.
