The sixth annual RUN 4 BEIGEL race honoring beloved high school teacher and coach Scott J. Beigel is returning to Parkland.
Beigel was fatally shot outside his classroom door after holding it open for fleeing students during the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting on February 14, 2018. He taught geography and coached cross-country.
After his death, his mother, Linda Beigel Schulman, and his cross-country team created the first RUN 4 BEIGEL race and fundraiser. The official racing event is raising funds for the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund, which sends at-risk, underserved kids touched by gun violence to summer sleep-away camps.
“My son Scott was a runner, a coach, a summer camp counselor, and a teacher,” Linda Beigel Schulman said to Parkland Talk. “He believed in the importance of teaching and supporting children through athletics and by example,” adding that the fund allows kids to be kids in a safe, nurturing community environment, away from guns and gangs.
“Our intent is pre-habilitation. We want to keep young, impressionable, and vulnerable children out of the criminal justice system by giving them hope and a positive path forward,” she added.
Douglas Eaton, the Race Director, said the organizers expect a record timeout of about 900 total participants this year.
The theme of the race this time is Getting Fit 4 Scott, and the Fund has partnered with local fitness organizations, such as the Title Sponsor, Rumble Boxing of Coral Springs, The Park, Crossfit Hardcore West, One to One Fitness, Orangetheory, F45, and Element Five Fitness.
“Scott was an athlete, and he believed in wellness. The local fitness community has embraced the Run 4 Beigel, and we love that,” Eaton said.
Held on Sunday, March 3, at Pine Trails Park, the RUN 4 BEIGEL race includes a 5K walk or run with a $50 race fee, a 10K Run with a $65 fee, and a Virtual Half Marathon, 5K or 10K that runners from around the country can participate in.
“This year, as an additional challenge, we have added a virtual half marathon with its own shirt and medal design. Next year, our priority is to make that part of the live event lineup. We are looking forward to a record level of participation this year,” said Eaton.
The in-person races include medals for the top three finishers, event t-shirts for all runners, and prizes for overall winners. The 5K race is stroller-friendly. The race registration ends on March 3.
Pine Trails Park is located at 10555 Trails End in Parkland.
