Parkland Dash Raises Funds for Schools, Parkland Buddy Sports

Thanks to the Parkland Dash fundraiser, Parkland Buddy Sports, and the city’s schools will all receive generous donations.

Parkland Buddy Sports is getting $6,560. The nationally recognized nonprofit organization has provided peer-to-peer sports programming for children and young adults with special needs.

All Broward County Public Schools in Parkland will each get $3,060: Heron Heights Elementary, Park Trails Elementary, Riverglades Elementary, Westglades Middle School, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Four principals were at the city commission meeting Wednesday night and said what they planned to do with the money.

Park Trails Elementary will use the money for its STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) program. Riverglades Elementary will use the funds to start a math special to focus on skills students may have lost from learning interrupted by Covid.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas will put the money toward staff initiatives, while Heron Heights Elementary will use the funds to expand extracurricular activities.

A yearly fundraiser, the Parkland Dash hosted by the city, consists of a 5k, 5-mile course and a family-friendly 1-mile fun run/walk at Pine Trails Park.

Commissioner Bob Mayersohn said the support for this year’s Dash was overwhelming.

“We had a record number of participants and the most funds raised through both sponsorships and donations ever. This is truly a clear indication of what makes our community special.”
